"Those Extraordinary Twins" was published as a short story, separate and distinct from its origins inside Twain's "The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson". As Twain explains, he extricated "Twins" from "Pudd'nhead" when he found, as he was writing, that he'd created a farce inside a tragedy. Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, The. And the Comedy Those Extraordinary Twins by TWAIN, Mark; CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne Book Description.

Pudd'nhead's Sources As MT admits in his headnote to The Comedy of Those Extraordinary Twins, writing The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson gave him "a sufficiently hard time." According to his account, the idea for the story occurred to him when he saw a picture advertising the exhibition of the Tocci Twins. He had been inspired by a set of Siamese twins he had seen in Europe, and subsequently decided to write a comedy about Siamese twins. The novel's original subjects were "those extraordinary twins," Luigi and Angelo Capello.
